The purpose of the exibition of the forgeries from the collection of the Police Museum conveniently entitlet Fool`s Gold Beauty is to warn about the unscrupulousness of the black market intentionally aimed at deceiving well-intentioned, yet naive and inexpert art buyers.

Systematic collection of such material started in 2009 when through the intermediary of the Crime Investigation Police Department, the courts allowed such forgeries to be kept at the Police Museum instead of being destroyed.

Most of the forgeries present in the collection are imitations of Edo Murtić, Zlatko Prica, Ljubo Ivančić and Mersad Berber, Dimitrije Popović, Đuro Pulitika, Vasko Lipovac, Ivan lacković Croata, Miljenko Stančić, Vladimir Kirin, Oskar Herman, Boris Bućan, Ivan Rabuzin, Ivan Generalić, Ferdo Kovačević, Izvor Oreb and Dragica Cvek Jordan. The collection also displays three sculptures falsely attributed to Dušan Džamonja and one to Vojin Bakić. As to the foreign artists, the collection contains forgeries signed P. A. Renoir and Salvador Dali.

The collection of stolen art pieces at the Ministry of the Interior keeps growing and due to the fact that there are still ostentatious buyers interested in purchasing a forged Berber, Generalić or Džamonja, skilled forgers will always have their  “clients”. The purpose of this exhibition is indeed to point out that the intentions of the many talented forgers are nothing but deception and financial gain.

The exhibition opens on Saturday, October 19th 2019 at 19:00h in Lazareti, naves 4 and 5. It will be open untill Nevember 7th from Monday till Friday from 10:00h till 18:00h, Saturdays from 10:00h till 14:00h.
