Lazareti once and today

Renewed Lazareti

31/03/2019

The minimalistic and elegantly shaped stone building of the Lazareti, near the eastern entrance to the historic core of Dubrovnik, for centuries has defended the city from less visible, but not less devastating enemies - plague, cholera and other infectious diseases.
The Lazareti were built as one of the preventive health measures to protect the inhabitants of Dubrovnik during the time of the Republic of Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik, as an exceptionally significant port of that time, received passengers from all over the world, and in the 14th century a decision was made, for the first time in the world, to introduce quarantine as a protection measure. It has been determined that neither domestic people nor foreigners coming from contagious diseases areas can enter the city if they do not spend 40 days in quarantine before. The first quarantines were built on the nearby islands of Mrkan, Bobara and Supetar, and then on Danče and the island of Lokrum. In year 1590, the construction of the Lazareti in Ploče began, which in the 17th century gained today's appearance. The Lazareti are the only fully preserved quarantine building on the European part of the Mediterranean. From outside, it resembles to the City Walls, and consists of ten halls (loggias) between which there are five inner courtyards (so called “badžafera”), with two two-floor houses at the entrance and at the end. After the need for the original quarantine function ceased, the complex had different functions (warehouses, slaughterhouses, stables, markets, catering and entertainment facilities). It is under the protection of UNESCO since 1979. The Lazareti is managed by the City of Dubrovnik, which is also the holder of the EU project "Lazareti - the creative hub of Dubrovnik" co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund. On this project the city has 10 partners: The Institute for Restoration of Dubrovnik, DURA, Dubrovnik TB, FA Linđo, Lazareti Art Workshop, Lero Student Theater, The Association DEŠA, the Social Association Deša PRO, The Association Dart and Arthur Sebastian Design. The total value of the project is 33,782,458.92 kunas, and the European Union co-finances 85% of the funds. With this funds will be restored three unrestored loggias of the complex (eighth, ninth, and tenth) and additionally equipped all ten loggias of the future cultural center. After restoration, Lazareti will promote the idea of symbiosis of cultural heritage and contemporary cultural and artistic creativity, with the desire to become a place for incubating new artistic ideas, living culture and social activity.
